Auction Process / Strategy [ Back ]

How does your auction process work?
We explain the entire auction process on our Bidding Overview page.

Are pre-bids proxy bids?  How about live auction bids?
Yes and yes.  In both cases, we will automatically bid on your behalf up to your max. bid (proxy bid), which will not be revealed until another user bids within $5 of it.

How many domain names and sales leads does each list contain?
Typically, each list holds 15-175 domains and 400-1000 sales leads.  While a 175-domain list sounds far more valuable than a 15-domain list, the names within 15-domain lists are very delicately selected such that each matches up with dozens of sales leads.  Most domains on 175-domain lists match up with less than half-a-dozen sales leads each.

Can I view the list of domains being auctioned?
Because NameFlipper auctions off exclusive access to information, not the domains themselves, allowing the public to view this data would nearly obliterate its value.

We do, however, display the total number of domain names and sales leads each NameFlipper list contains.  When comparing multiple lists within a given type (e.g. several  Deleting .NET domain lists, juxtaposed side-by-side), expected expenditures per list generally run proportional to the number of domains and expected revenues proportional to the number of sales leads.  However, it is difficult to compare expected profits across lists of different types based on number of domains and sales leads alone.  For a comparison of list types, see our List Types FAQ.

How high should I bid on each list?
It depends largely on (1) how much your time is worth to you, and (2) your skills as a salesperson.  Excluding their bids, our users have reported average total quick-flip profits of $500 per deleting domains list and $750 per pre-release list, with our most skilled salespeople reporting earnings of double or triple these figures.

You could, therefore, bid up to these $500/$750 figures and expect to break even on your list within several; given that you'll be spending 3-5 hours marketing your list's domains and that your time is undoubtably important to you, however, you should set a max. bid that will allow you to earn satisfying profits from your effort.

Our users report that it requires them an average of 4 hours to pitch the domains on their lists and engage in subsequent negotiations.   Thus, if you're bidding on a deleting domain list and you consider your time worth $50/hour to you, you would bid up to $300 ($500 - $50 x 4) on that list.  However, many domainers -- even those who would willingly work for $20/hour -- choose not to bid that high because either (a) they lack confidence in their sales skills, even over e-mail (and have chosen not to try our end-user sales methods), or (b) they do not trust our earnings figures beause NameFlipper lists represent a fairly new product and no prominent third parties have yet verified these figures.  We do believe that as NameFlipper gains popularity, however, high bids on NameFlipper lists will top out around low/mid 3-figures apiece.
